United States President Donald Trump announced a trade deal with India on Monday (Feb 2), saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had pledged to stop buying Russian oil over the war in Ukraine. Trump said he was cutting tariffs on Indian goods to 18 per cent. He had previously levied 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs, plus an additional 25 per cent for New Delhi’s purchases of Moscow’s oil. Sadanand Dhume, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a Washington-based think tank, weighs in on what the deal means for India’s economy on CNA’s Asia First.
