Indonesia is one of the world’s largest producers of seaweed, but cultivation involves single-use plastic bottles, which is a major ocean pollutant. Seaweed farmers use plastic bottles as buoys to keep their seed lines at optimal depth. A pilot project by the government aims to reduce waste and promote more sustainable farming practices by using buoys made of high-density polyethylene. The recyclable thermoplastic is known for its high strength-to-density ratio and its resistance to chemicals. Chandni Vatvani reports from South Sulawesi.
