In Bangladesh, vote counting is underway for elections that have been seen as a test of transition to democracy. The faceoff is between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party led by Tarique Rahman and the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami helmed by Shafiqur Rahman. Interim leader Muhammad Yunus has hailed the vote as an opportunity to build a new Bangladesh after the "end of a nightmare". This is the South Asian nation’s first first election since the 2024 youth-led uprising led to the ouster of long-time premier Sheikh Hasina. Afifah Ariffin reports from Dhaka.
