Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton handily secured the Republican nomination for Senate and is now set to face Democratic nominee and State House Rep. James Talarico.
The loss is incumbent Sen. John Cornyn’s first loss in more than three decades in Texas politics. Paxton had been the favorite to win since receiving the endorsement of President Donald Trump and is the latest Trump-backed Republican to prevail in a hotly contested primary, following Ed Gallerin’s ousting of Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie in a primary last week.
In his acceptance speech, Paxton thanked Trump for his endorsement and called his Democratic opponent, "a threat to everything we hold dear in this state and in this country."
