Former National Security Adviser John Bolton, a fierce critic of President Donald Trump, has reached a plea deal in the criminal case over his handling of classified information.
John Bolton Classified Documents Plea Deal
• The Plea Agreement: John Bolton, the former National Security Adviser during the first Trump administration who later became a fierce critic of Donald Trump, has agreed to a plea deal with the Department of Justice.
• The Charges: Bolton was originally indicted on 18 federal counts (8 counts of transmitting national defense information and 10 counts of retaining it). Under the new agreement, he is pleading guilty to just a single count of illegal retention of sensitive national security information.
• Financial and Prison Penalties: The deal includes a heavy $2.25 million fine. His potential prison sentence will range from zero to a maximum cap of 5 years (60 months), though the deal allows for the possibility of avoiding prison time entirely, subject to final approval by a federal judge.
• The Core of the Case: The case stems from “diary-like” entries and notes Bolton compiled during his time in the White House, which he later used while preparing his 2020 memoir, The Room Where It Happened. Prosecutors accused him of sharing over 1,000 pages of these notes—some containing highly sensitive and Top Secret information regarding high-level meetings, intelligence briefings, and talks with foreign leaders—with two family members (his wife and daughter) via personal email and commercial messaging apps.
• Key Distinctions: The plea deal explicitly does not allege any wrongdoing regarding the actual publication of his book, nor does it accuse him of sharing documents with foreign adversaries or the media. Furthermore, while Trump’s Justice Department has faced criticism for prosecuting several of his political opponents, investigators note that the inquiry into Bolton actually began under career federal prosecutors before Trump returned to office.
Bolton’s formal “re-arraignment” and entry of the guilty plea took place in a Maryland federal court on June 26, 2026.
