Graham Platner is suspending his U.S. Senate candidacy in Maine and removing his name from the ballot, he announced Wednesday night, halting a tumultuous campaign that has been haunted from the start by the Marine Corps veteran’s past.
After a steady drum beat of scandals, Platner’s high-stakes bid for an elusive GOP-held seat in the Pine Tree State imploded this week, after a woman he dated years ago publicly accused him of sexual assault – an allegation he denies.
In recent days, prominent Democrats and financial backers quickly pulled their support, all but dooming his candidacy even as he resisted calls to step aside.
