Israeli attacks leave at least 20 dead in Gaza

A Governing Board vote late Thursday night is sending shockwaves throughout the Phoenix Union High School District.
A major budget shortfall and declining enrollment led to the cutting of more than 160 non-teaching jobs.
This situation is being called a necessary evil by the board, but there’s a lot of frustration and even uproar over some of these cuts, especially the jobs that focus on school safety and performing arts that will soon be gone.
“This doesn’t make any sense,” said Michelle Delgado, a PXU assistant principal of student success.
“It’s either (the cutting of) or closing campuses,” said Phoenix Union High School District Governing Board President Ceyshe Napa during the meeting.
The board said RIF is mostly impacting staff outside the classroom.
“We’re the backbone because we’re also keeping the campus safe,” said Delgado.
Delgado’s position, assistant principal of student success, is on the chopping block. She holds that title and said her job is to handle discipline and crisis management.
“I’m about a year away from retirement, but I wanted to stay longer because I love what I do and I love the students and the community,” she said.
District leaders said that while that role is being eliminated, the responsibilities are not going away and instead they will be divided among the administrative team left standing.
