At least 20 children are hospitalised weekly from button battery incidents, with cases spiking around Christmas when toys containing these batteries are commonly given as gifts. Consumer testing reveals that four out of five online platforms including AliExpress, Amazon, eBay and Temu are selling unsafe products that don’t meet Australian safety standards.
