Surging rates of flu have left the NHS buckling under pressure.

Today, the NHS said this unprecedented wave of super flu had left it in a "a worst-case scenario" this December.

Hospital beds occupied by flu patients increased by 55% in one week.

The latest data show an average of 2,660 patients in hospitals in England with the bug each day.

It’s the highest ever for this time of year – and just before Christmas.

So what can you do to prevent getting the superflu strain?

Experts say the strain circulating at the moment, called H3N2 or subclade K, spreads easier.

But the measures to protect yourself remain the same, including washing your hands regularly and staying off school or work if you have symptoms.

The main flu symptom is a sudden high temperature. Others are an achey body, fatigue, a sore throat and headache.

Keep your immune system supported by getting enough sleep and eating healthily as much as possible.

The NHS has already sent out a "flu jab SOS" encouraging vulnerable people to get their free vaccination.

This includes anyone over 65, those with long-term health conditions, carers, care home residents and pregnant women.

High street chemists offer the jab for everyone else for a cost of roughly £20.

Health chiefs say children are far more likely to catch and spread flu, while older people are the ones most likely to end up in hospital if they get it.

And when cases increase in children, as they did before half term, it’s a warning sign that it will likely spread into other age groups.

Children aged from two to 17 are eligible for a free vaccine too.

If yours hasn’t received theirs at school already, visit the NHS website to find the closest pharmacy, GP or local service for a catch-up jab to protect your family at Christmas.
