Conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has been elected as Chile’s next president following a landslide victory.

The 59-year-old defeated Communist Party politician and former Labour Minister Jeannette Jara with nearly 58 per cent of the vote.

Shortly after the polls closed in the election, Jara conceded defeat on stage while speaking to her supporters.

Kast’s election victory follows a growing trend of conservative election victories across South America, following wins in Argentina and Ecuador.

The 59-year-old’s victory was his first after running for election three times; his latest attempt in 2021 saw him lose to outgoing President Gabriel Boric.
