Israeli attacks leave at least 20 dead in Gaza
By Rodrigo Santos Andrade
Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese proposed tougher gun laws on Monday (Dec 15) after two gunmen killed 15 people in a mass shooting targeting a Jewish festival at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. The shooting raised questions about whether Australia’s gun laws, already among the toughest in the world, remain fit for purpose. Political sociologist Josh Roose, an associate professor at Deakin University, noted that the gun laws – which bans semi-automatic firearms – likely prevented the attackers from causing an even higher death toll. He tells CNA’s Asia Now that it would be challenging to tighten the country’s already-comprehensive gun laws any further.
