This week, China has pushed back against remarks by the British Foreign Secretary on the recent conviction of Jimmy Lai, who was found guilty of violating China’s National Security Law in connection with the 2019 riots in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Beijing has rejected the secretary’s view that the ruling was a "politically motivated prosecution," and says Britain is interfering in China’s internal affairs and mischaracterizing the criminal case as a political one. So what did the court actually rule? Why has this case triggered such strong reactions abroad? And what does this conviction mean for the governance of Hong Kong?
