The New South Wales parliament has passed new gun laws overnight in the wake of the Bondi tragedy.

Legislation aims to tighten gun laws as well as give police more powers to restrict protests.

The bill passed the upper house just before 3am with bipartisan support from the Liberals.

It’s understood the Nationals and Shooters Party were against the new laws.

Changes will include limiting the number of guns per licence holder, except for farmers and professional shooters.

Owners must be citizens whose licences are renewed every two years.

Premier Chris Minns is preparing for strong resistance from pro-Palestine activists over mass protest bans.

The laws, which were drafted after Bondi’s massacre, will go back to the lower house on Wednesday for final approval.
