Tens of thousands of Ukrainian men are trying to avoid conscription as peace negotiations fail to yield substantial progress. Many of them are crossing into neighboring Romania through treacherous mountains, often in freezing temperatures. At least 19 have died trying.
Clarissa Ward hears from draft evaders, a man who claims to facilitate illegal crossings, and the head of the mountain rescue service that has saved hundreds of Ukrainians from the mountains since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
