The Straits of Malacca and Singapore – one of the world’s most vital maritime corridors, carrying about 60% of global trade – recorded a sharp rise in sea robberies in 2025. Anti-piracy watchdog ReCAAP reported 108 incidents, a 74% increase from the previous year. Most cases were non-violent and involved petty theft, but experts warn they still pose safety risks and distract from safe navigation in congested waters. Industry observers say worsening socio-economic conditions may be driving opportunistic crimes, with perpetrators targeting slow-moving vessels.
