Authorities in New South Wales have issued a warning that "lives could be lost" as the state prepares for the third day of a widespread heatwave.

Today’s high temperature in Sydney Harbour is expected to be 43 degrees, with similar temperatures anticipated in the western suburbs.

Total fire bans are in effect in many areas, including Greater Sydney, the Hunter, and the Illawarra, which have also received Extreme Fire Danger alerts.
