Myanmar will ‘continue to be ruled by fear and intimidation’ after election: Ex-ambassador

Vote counting is underway in Myanmar following the second phase of its military-run election, which has been widely derided as a sham, on Sunday (Jan 11). The polls are the first since the 2021 coup that ousted the government of Aung San Suu Kyi and plunged the country into civil war. Nicholas Coppel, vice-president of the Australia-Myanmar Institute and a former Australian ambassador to Myanmar, tells CNA’s Asia First he will be “very surprised” if Myanmar’s new government acts any differently from the current military leadership.
