By Rodrigo Santos Andrade
A judge sentenced April McLaughlin to 3.5 years in prison and seven years of probation Thursday for fraud and animal cruelty following the 2023 discovery of 55 dogs living in squalor at her Chandler home.
As part of a plea agreement, McLaughlin must pay at least $173,000 in restitution, with $124,000 designated for her elderly mother who was also found living in the biohazardous conditions.
The case, which investigators described as a "house of horrors," also involved the discovery of five dead dogs stored in a freezer on the property.
