A South Korean court has on Friday (Jan 16) found former president Yoon Suk Yeol guilty of obstructing justice and sentenced him to five years in prison, less than the 10-year term prosecutors demanded. The court ruled that Yoon obstructed investigators from entering his residence and falsified documents related to his failed martial law bid in December 2024.
However, the court acknowledged this was his first offence and reduced the sentence. Yoon’s lawyers plan to appeal, while civic groups have gathered over 18,000 signatures supporting the death penalty for the more serious insurrection charge he faces next month.
