‘Completely wrong’: EU leaders criticise Trump’s new tariff threat amid dispute over Greenland

European leaders have criticised President Donald Trump’s threat of new tariffs for NATO allies who oppose his plans for US control of Greenland.
President Trump has pledged to impose 10 per cent tariffs on eight European countries while also accusing them of playing a “very dangerous game”.
Denmark’s Foreign Affairs Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen claimed the American leader’s announcement came as a “surprise” and explained that the purpose of an increased military presence in Greenland is to “enhance security in the Arctic”.
French President Emmanuel Macron said the tariff threats from the US are “unacceptable” and have “no place in this context” while Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson claimed Sweden would not allow itself to be “blackmailed”.
Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated the United Kingdom’s position on Greenland and said: “Applying tariffs on allies for pursuing the collective security of NATO allies is completely wrong.”
