Chile declares state of catastrophe as wildfires rage across the country

Wildfires have continued to wreak havoc and rage across central and southern Chile, leaving much of the country under heat alerts.
Chile’s President Gabriel Boric has declared a state of catastrophe in the country’s central Biobio region and neighbouring Nuble region.
The regions, about 500 kilometres south of Chile’s capital, Santiago, have been plagued by wildfires raging across the country.
At least 18 people have reportedly been killed, and at least 20,000 people have been evacuated.
Disaster officials say about 250 homes have been destroyed by the wildfires as they scorch thousands of hectares of land.
