Fire crews say it’s a reminder to plan for the worst case scenario.
Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller said far too many families are not prepared when a fire breaks out in their house, and the biggest reason is that they don’t have working smoke detectors.
“Fire doubles every 30 seconds, so if you have smoke detectors, you have about two minutes before that fire has quadrupled,” he said.
Keller also recommends having a fire escape plan. “There’s heat – there’s smoke – low visibility,” he said. “A lot of chaos is going on, which is why it is so important that you plan an escape route.”
Jason Barry reports from the Pinal County community, east of the Valley.
