There are concerns in Italy after the United States revealed it would be sending Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to the Winter Olympics.
Current and former Italian lawmakers are calling for the country’s Prime Minister to intervene and block their presence following the two fatal shootings in Minnesota.
“As mayor of Milan and as an Italian, I would not like it at all … it’s a police force that acts in complete illegality,” Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala said.
“Apart from the fact that they kill, illegality means they also enter houses of citizens without any warrant; they sign their own warrants. So, they’re completely incompatible with their own ways of dealing with security.”
A spokesperson for the US Department of Homeland Security says ICE will serve a security role at the Olympics and can’t do immigration enforcement in a foreign country.
