A US judge has dismissed federal murder and weapons charges against Luigi Mangione in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
The prosecution was seeking the death penalty on these charges.
Other federal charges, including stalking, remain in play and could carry a life sentence if convicted.
State charges also remain.
The judge allowed evidence seized from Mangione’s backpack, including a gun and notebook, to be used despite defence arguments.
Mangione, an Ivy League graduate from a wealthy family, has become a cult figure and symbol of protest against the US health insurance system.
