More than 19,000 devotees in Singapore took part in this year’s Thaipusam celebrations, about 20% more than last year. Nearly 350 kavadi — ornate frames pierced into the skin symbolising physical sacrifice — and more than 19,000 paal kudam (milk pot) carriers made the 3.2-kilometre journey on foot. Caitlin Ng finds out how organisers catered for the highest turnout in recent years.
