Congress leader Shashi Tharoor denounced US President Donald Trump‘s conduct as “unusual” and “unstable”, highlighting the impact of US tariffs on Indian exports and jobs. Shashi Tharoor spoke out on Friday about Donald Trump‘s decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods. He said the unprecedented action by Donald Trump flouts conventional diplomatic norms and has already cost several Indians their jobs.

Donald Trump‘s tariffs, including an additional 25% fine on Russian oil imports, have made Indian exports to the United States increasingly unviable. Emphasizing the need for India to diversify its export markets, Shashi Tharoor stated that the US president’s trade war has already impacted more than 100,000 jobs in Surat’s gems and jewelry sector, as well as in the seafood and produce industries.

According to Shashi Tharoor, an effective 50% tariff, including assessments tied to Russian oil purchases, is not just a trade barrier, but a sanction. “Imposing an additional 25% is not a tariff. It’s actually an assessment, and it’s a sanction against us for buying oil from Russia. But this is totally unfair because China is importing more oil and gas from Russia”, he said, arguing that the US should implement a uniform policy for countries that buy Russian oil.
