The New York Times linked Flávio Bolsonaro’s suggestion to attack Rio de Janeiro and Cláudio Castro’s statement to Donald Trump to the mega-operation that resulted in 119 deaths.
The New York Times linked the mega-operation carried out on Tuesday, October 28th, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to a post made last week by Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) suggesting US intervention to deal with alleged drug trafficking ships in Guanabara Bay. The publication recalls that the senator spoke of envying the government of Donald Trump (Republican Party) for investing in attacks against drug traffickers in the Pacific Ocean.

“I heard there are boats like this one here in Rio de Janeiro, in Guanabara Bay, flooding Brazil with drugs. Wouldn’t you like to spend a few months here helping us fight these terrorist organizations?” wrote Senator Flávio Bolsonaro on October 23rd on the social media platform X, in response to US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
Furthermore, the report also stated that the term “narcoterrorism,” used by Governor Cláudio Castro (PL), is the same one used by Trump in the fight against drug trafficking. The newspaper stated that the ally of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) tried to gain points on the issue of public security, a cause most defended by right-wing parties in Brazil. Operation Contenção was launched in the Alemão and Penha complexes, which encompass 26 communities in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro. Among the dead is the head of the 53rd DP (Mesquita Police Station), Marcus Vinicius. The operation targets the Comando Vermelho (CV) faction. The Secretary of Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, Felipe Curi, stated on Wednesday that the official count so far is 119 dead, including 4 police officers, and 113 people arrested.
