President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) was invited by Vladimir Putin to an event in Moscow on May 9, 2025. Lula intends to attend the ceremony, which commemorates the 80th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Lula expressed to Vladimir Putin his concern about the international scenario and reaffirmed Brazil’s commitment to promoting peace. The leaders also discussed the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and Putin thanked Brazil for its contribution to the search for a peaceful solution, in addition to having shown “interest in the work of the Group of Friends of Peace, launched by Brazil and China at the UN last September”, the Presidency reported. Lula and Putin agreed to maintain permanent contact on this topic.

The Russian president also suggested the resumption of the High-Level Bilateral Commission between the two countries and expressed support for the Brazilian presidency of BRICS.
