Matthew Dowd explained that when he made the comments, it was not yet known that Charlie Kirk was the target of the attack and had been shot at the event.
Matthew Dowd, a veteran of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney‘s 2004 presidential campaigns, was fired from MSNBC after making comments about Charlie Kirk, which he made when asked by MSNBC anchor Katy Tur about “the environment in which a shooting like this happens.”

“He’s been one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions. And I think that is the environment we are in. You can’t stop with these sort of awful thoughts you have and then saying these awful words and not expect awful actions to take place. And that’s the unfortunate environment we are in.”, Matthew Dowd stated in his response.
“The Right Wing media mob ginned up, went after me on a plethora of platforms, and MSNBC reacted to that mob.”, Matthew Dowd reported after being fired from MSNBC on Friday.
commentI’ve had my lifetime fill of main stream media. I’d get more accurate news from reading tea leaves.
commentI’m so happy I stopped watching MSNBC when they helped to elect Trump.
commentMe too. I shutoff all MSM two years ago.
commentMatthew Dowd is not only a decent person, but a very skilled, politically astute addition to any conversation that pertains to the political, social and economic conditions occurring nationally and globally. Which is why he doesnt fit into garbage media that exists now. He needs a substack and a podcast.
commentSo MSNBC executives overreacted?
commentHis timing was unfortunate, but he wasn’t wrong. I regret évery murder, even if it’s a victim I disagree with strongly, but I can’t help wondering why people are outraged about Kirk related remarks, when they were very quiet when Dem. politician Melissa Hortman & husband were murdered, 3 months ago.
commentSuch a shame he lost his job! MSNBC bowed to pressure. He needs to be reinstated.
commentMSNBC give him his job back, with an apology! It’s not like he went on TV and advocated for euthanizing homeless people with lethal injections.
commentWhere’s his friend Nicolle Wallace in this mess? Has she defended him?
commentWhat exactly are they afraid of? What do they think this will get them? NYT recently asked if Charlie Kirk was like MLK? What it hit them was a 15 b suit from Trump.
