The federal government is proposing changes to travel entitlements for ministers.

It follows controversial revelations about the expenses of several federal parliamentarians, including Labor frontbenchers Anika Wells and Michelle Rowland.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed a number of recommendations have been made in a letter to the Remuneration Tribunal, including new rules for all family reunion travel to be booked in economy class.

The government is also seeking to remove access to Australia-wide family reunion travel, restricting it to Canberra and within the jurisdiction of a parliamentarian or senator.

The Prime Minister has defended the delay to his decision after previously resisting calls to tighten rules.

The tribunal will consider the letter in the new year.
