Australia is reeling from one of its deadliest terror attacks, after at least 15 people were killed in a mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday (Dec 14). Distressing footage of the suspects – a father-and-son pair – has circulated in the past few days, with experts warning of a lasting psychological impact. Australian crisis support hotline Lifeline reported more than 4,300 calls in the day following the attack. Dr Rachel Menzies, a lecturer at the University of Sydney who is also a clinical psychologist and director at Menzies Anxiety Centre, shares with CNA’s Asia First what signs of distress to look out for, such as feeling more hypervigilant or panicked. She also warns that repeated exposure to disturbing footage can be damaging to psychological health.
