Phoenix’s mayor wants to tackle traffic congestion by exploring "bold" options like closing downtown streets to cars and removing parked cars from major roads. While a reporter easily found a parking spot downtown, local shop owners claim parking is a big problem that hurts business. The mayor, however, believes the main issue is traffic flow, not a lack of parking, and is focused on making streets more efficient for moving vehicles.
Generic-label products offer consumers savings over brand-name items because of lower packaging and product quality. For example, generic peaches cost 10 cents less than the brand name, and generic grape jelly is 50 cents cheaper. However, buying generic doesn’t always guarantee the best deal, as a brand-name product on sale can sometimes be a better bargain.
Good Samaritan Hospital is closing its on-site daycare nursery, citing a lack of use and a need to cut costs. Administrators say the center is no longer needed for recruitment, and raising rates to break even would make it more expensive than other local options. However, many employees, who rely on the affordable, convenient care, say the closure will force them to find a new job.
Moving from the small town of White River to the massive Arizona State University campus with its 36,000 students can be intimidating for freshmen like Mark. His first day was a mix of calm moments and overwhelming crowds, from sitting in a lecture to navigating the traffic jams in the memorial union. Despite his initial worries about tough professors and homework, Mark ended the day on a high note, feeling positive about his classes and looking forward to his time at ASU.
The supersonic Concorde jet made a promotional stop in Phoenix, landing without issue despite its loud noise. While smaller than a 747, the plane is capable of speeds up to 1,300 mph, though it’s limited to 650 mph in the U.S. It drew a large crowd of spectators and dignitaries, but it’s unlikely to become a regular fixture at Sky Harbor anytime soon.
Major record companies plan to raise album prices to $8.98 by Christmas, a significant jump from the current price of $7.98. This move is frustrating retailers, who feel helpless to stop it, and consumers, who are likely to pay the higher price despite initial boycotts. In response, a foundation of smaller producers and artists is planning legal action to block the price increases.
A health fair for children was held this morning, featuring a 5000-meter mini-marathon and free medical screenings to teach kids about staying in shape. The event aimed to help children avoid future health problems like heart disease and high blood pressure, with a focus on topics like weight management and dental hygiene.
