The Xi’an-Yan’an high-speed railway opened on Friday, expanding China’s high-speed network in the northwest. Travel between Xi’an and Yan’an is now around one hour-down from several-with trains reaching 350 km/h.
The line overcomes major engineering hurdles, with over 91% of its route comprising bridges and tunnels across the geologically complex Loess Plateau. Engineers used 3D remote sensing and modeling to identify and mitigate risks from unstable, collapsible loess soil.
By providing faster, safer travel across the plateau, the railway enhances regional connectivity and opens new development opportunities.
