Newly released documents from China’s Central Archives, transferred from Russia, shed light on the Khabarovsk trial of Japan’s Unit 731. The records detail the full trial process, showing how the Soviet Union carried out the only prosecution in history focused on biological war crimes. In 1949, 12 Japanese military personnel were sentenced to prison terms ranging from two to 25 years, before being repatriated to Japan in 1956. Reporter Chen Mengfei revisits this chapter of World War Two.
