The main challenge of the day is achieving a rendition of what the customer wants. Matt’s practice canvas is an array of synthetic skin designed to mimic the varying texture and resistance of human flesh. Under the watchful eye of a master artist, Matt attempts to trace simple flash designs, quickly encountering issues like overworking the material, causing "blowouts" that blur the ink, or not going deep enough, resulting in weak, patchy lines. Frustration mounts as Matt struggles with the machine’s vibration and the need for a steady, consistent hand speed, realizing that drawing on paper is fundamentally different from driving ink into a flexible, living surface.
The final demonstration is a high-pressure exercise where Matt must execute a medium sized design on a final piece of real skin on a real person. They are judged not only on the artistic quality and execution (line consistency, saturation, and being in the lines) but also on the reaction of the customer. The tattoo episode celebrates the intense focus and dexterity required, leaving viewers with a newfound respect for the permanence of the medium.
