Khaleda Zia spent years positioning herself as the face of anti-India politics in Bangladesh. In fact, Zia and her arch-rival Sheikh Hasina– popularly described as the ‘battling begums’ — represented two opposing poles in their approach towards India. Yet Zia’s own life began across the border in Jalpaiguri in undivided Bengal — an irony that has often gone unnoticed in her controversial political legacy. The three-time prime minister of Bangladesh died on Tuesday at 80, just weeks ahead of crucial polls where she was seen as a leading contender for the top post.
