Myanmar’s military government is looking to prosecute more than 200 people for allegedly attempting to sabotage election processes. From Dec 28, voters will head to their first polls in five years, in phases. The military-led government has touted the elections as a step towards reconciliation in the conflict-stricken country. In July, the army enacted a new law threatening those planning to oppose or disrupt polls with sentences ranging from the death penalty to maximum 20 years behind bars. Critics have dismissed the polls as a sham, citing free speech curbs. More than 22,000 activists and protesters have been jailed on political grounds.
