Marine pollution is a major threat at the Bosphorus Strait, which connects the Black Sea to the Marmara Sea. Rising vessel traffic raises the risk of oil spills and chemical discharges. In the first nine months of 2025, 29,710 vessels crossed the Bosphorus, with the total expected to exceed 40,000 by year’s end.
