Israeli attacks leave at least 20 dead in Gaza
By Rodrigo Santos Andrade
Australian police said Tuesday (Dec 16) that a father-and-son pair who allegedly committed a mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach last weekend appeared to have been inspired by Islamic State. They had travelled to the Philippines last month, going to Manila and then to Davao on Nov 1 before leaving on Nov 28, said officials. Islamic State-linked networks are known to operate in the Philippines and have wielded some influence in the south of the country. Professor Greg Barton, rector and professor of global Islamic politics at Deakin University Lancaster University Indonesia, says there is “certainly a cause for concern” of a similar threat emerging in Southeast Asia. He tells CNA’s Asia Tonight that it should not be ruled out that guns could cross borders and make their way into Malaysia, Indonesia or even Singapore.
