Israeli attacks leave at least 20 dead in Gaza

Thailand and Cambodia must “uphold the spirit of dialogue, wisdom and mutual respect” to ease tensions and safeguard regional peace and stability, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Sunday (Dec 21), ahead of a special Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers’ meeting to address the two neighbours’ ongoing conflict. Anwar added that Monday’s meeting would provide an opportunity for both sides to directly negotiate and resolve their differences peacefully. However, Bridget Welsh, an honorary research associate at the University of Nottingham’s Asia Research Institute in Malaysia, says external players are unlikely to provide a long-term solution to the conflict. Speaking to CNA’s Asia First, she adds that the dispute is driven by deeper and unresolved issues. These include disagreements over colonial-era border maps, scam centres operating in Cambodia, domestic political considerations and nationalist sentiment.
