In the arid foothills of the Tianshan Mountains, Xinjiang’s Tiemenguan city has become an unexpected sanctuary for wildlife. Over 5,000 grey cranes have descended upon recently harvested farmlands on the edge of the Taklamakan Desert, transforming the winter-scape into a stage for nature’s performance. The cranes forage on leftover grains from corn and sunflower crops, across the 40,000-hectare grounds of reclaimed desert farmland. This annual migration is a testament to successful habitat restoration efforts that have brought back ecological balance and vitality to the region.
