Pope Leo XIV has held Christmas Eve midnight mass for the first time since becoming pontiff in St Peter’s Basilica.

Approximately 6,000 people watched the ceremony in person, with 5,000 watching from screens outside the building.

Pope Leo, in his sermon, used the story of the birth of Jesus to remind Christians of their duty to support the poor and strangers.
