Two Rehmans, One Tragedy: What Happened to Benazir Bhutto?

December 27 marks the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto outside Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh — a defining and unresolved tragedy in Pakistan’s history. After returning from exile on October 18, 2007, despite serious security warnings, Benazir narrowly survived the devastating Karsaz twin blasts in Karachi that claimed more than 177 lives. She reportedly escaped that attack largely due to a human shield formed by underworld figure Rehman Dacoit, whose group had been assigned to her security at the time.

The starkly contrasting roles of Rehman Dacoit — who shielded her during the Karachi bombing — and Rehman Malik, who was responsible for her security on the day of her assassination, continue to fuel debate and suspicion surrounding the circumstances of Benazir Bhutto’s killing.

Watch Abbas Naqvi explain how the actions — and failures — of the two Rehmans shaped this tragic chapter in Pakistan’s history.
