Under former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Maricopa County used 287(g) to conduct neighborhood sweeps and traffic stops that targeted Latino communities, leading to a landmark racial profiling case and millions in costs. Civil rights attorney Danny Ortega warns local agencies not to repeat the same mistakes as new 287(g) partnerships emerge.
