Hong Kong Post, Hong Kong’s postal service, will stop handling packages from or to the United States starting April 27.
In a statement released on Wednesday (15), the Hong Kong government cited US President Donald Trump’s decision last week to eliminate the so-called “de minimis” exception for postal items sent from the city to the United States. “The United States is irrational, bullying and imposes abusive tariffs. The public in Hong Kong should be prepared to pay exorbitant and unreasonable fees due to the irrational and bullying actions of the United States,” the Hong Kong government said.
On April 8, Donald Trump signed an executive order tripling tariffs on products worth less than US$800 sent from China, including Hong Kong. Currently, packages worth less than $800 are exempt from tariffs under this waiver. These products were originally scheduled to face tariffs of 30% starting May 2. But Trump’s latest executive order raised the rates to 120% last week (or a “per-item” cost of $100 starting May 2, which increases to $200 on June 1).
