A man is in custody after police say six senior citizens were attacked at a Tempe community center late Wednesday morning.
Tempe PD confirms 62-year-old Derek Kirven has been arrested in connection with the assault that happened at the Escalante Multi-Generational Center on Orange Street just west of the Loop 101.
Police say Kirven showed up at the center around 9 a.m. and was told to leave because he wasn’t a member. He was confronted by staff again when he returned around 11:30 a.m.
When staff once again told him to leave, police say he violently attacked six people, punching some and throwing others to the ground. One person was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Stephanie Duprey reports from the East Valley.
