Wild horse advocates are calling for justice after nine horses were shot and killed last week in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest.
The horses were part of a popular herd that draws visitors from across the country to the forest outside of Heber-Overgaard.
The Forest Service said the killed horses are considered feral and are not protected under federal law.
Betty Nixon, a local advocate for the Heber Wild Horses, said she spends up to 50 hours a week watching and caring for the animals.
“I’d like to see justice served,” Nixon said. “These are cowardly acts. They’re heinous, cowardly crimes.”
Mason Carroll reports.
