Albanese’s using firearm owners as a ‘scapegoat’: Tasmania pushes back against gun reforms

The Tasmanian Liberal government is demanding more evidence and community consultation before supporting the proposed national gun buyback scheme.
The state has the second-highest rate of gun ownership in the country and wants to respect the importance of firearms for rural communities and recreational hunters.
Shooters Fisher Farmers MP Carlo Di Falco says, “I think Albanese just wants a bit of cover, so if he could scapegoat a minority group like firearm owners to cover himself, he will.”
The Greens have criticised the government’s stance, considering 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the Port Arthur massacre.
