Gov. Katie Hobbs has proposed a one-time payment of $20 million to the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management in her 2027 budget to help cover fire suppression costs.
The funding would pay for retardant drops and fuel-reduction projects, such as prescribed burns, as the state faces longer, more intense fire seasons.
Fighting fires costs the U.S. an average of nearly $3 billion annually, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
Arizona feels the financial strain at the state level as fire seasons extend and intensify.
