Federal crash investigators are trying to determine what brought down an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter in Flagstaff last week during an exchange of gunfire between police and an armed domestic violence suspect.
“There’s usually not a single cause of an accident. There’s usually multiple causes that cause aircraft to come down,” said Cary Grant, an assistant professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Arizona’s Family spoke with Grant about what investigators are looking for as they try to figure out what caused the chopper to crash.
“It is very similar to how they investigate airplanes,” said Grant.
DPS Ranger 56 came down during an intense shootout between law enforcement and 50-year-old Terrell Storey on the night of Feb. 4. The pilot, 61-year-old Robert Skankey, and paramedic, 28-year-old Hunter Bennett, both died.
Steven Sarabia reports.
